Most of us know there are a TON of food + bev options in the greater Charleston SC area. You could visit a new restaurant for every meal, 365 days out of the year, and STILL not get through all of our lovely cuisine. From southern cooking to seafood, rooftop drinks to burgers, or curried dishes and noodle bowls, there are many great spots to pick from. We often get asked by friends, family, or those seeking their next home, where is a great local place to eat? The Greater Charleston Properties Team gives you each of their top 3(ish) picks.

The Hit List

Number one is definitely Wild Oliveon Johns Island. One of my clients and friends is a chef there, and we love going in to support him! Their food is amazing, always changing, and we go there for any special occasion that we can. The quality is price is the best in town.

We also love going to Indaco Charleston downtown. Their food is always great, the atmosphere is friendly and inviting, and I LOVE their black pepper tagliatelle. If you haven't had it- change that quickly.

It's hard to pick just three, but I think our third would be Fleet Landing. We love waterfront dining, and this is one of the only options for that in Downtown Charleston. In addition to the atmosphere, though, the food is always very good, the fish is fresh, and the prices are extremely reasonable!

Fleet LandingThe only spot on the harbor in Downtown Charleston,
fun atmosphere, fair prices, something for everyone and not just seafood.
This is the bar where my husband Mark and I sat and decided to move here from Boston! Both best choices!

Leon's Oyster Shop
Another favorite lunch place Downtown, eclectic, yummy, affordable and low key vibe. The portions are good to share since I can never decide on what one thing I want to eat!

The Cocktail Club Charleston
Where we always start our rare nights out on the town. Its Downtown rooftop bar is a cool scene, and the interior decor feels like you're in a Members Only speakeasy club. Unique cocktail menu with a variety of choices to try and cool blends of flavors.

CO Charleston
- Hip little place on Lower King Street with some unbelievable Vietnamese and Asian dishes. The beef pho is an absolute fave.

The Rooftop Bar at The Vendue I love this place for an intimate gathering of friends. Some of the best wine and appetizers, a classy atmosphere, not to mention the incredible views of Downtown Charleston. There's a reason why it's been voted best rooftop bar since 2007.

Mondo's Italian is a must on James Island. Great for dinner or casual lunch, and it's awesome if you're looking for authentic, northern Italian food. I cannot recommend their eggplant parmigiana enough! It's also close to other James Island shops and short drive to Folly Beach, so it's a perfect date night spot for dinner and stroll on the Folly pier!  Don't miss the homemade spicy sausage arancini balls or meatballs either!

Cru Cafe: Cru exudes Charleston charm around every corner. The culinary team is top notch and never disappoints when it comes to flavor. While this Downtown place hides in the shadows to some of Charleston's other well-known establishments, this is one of the remaining hidden gems. You still need reservations, though, as it is TINY. I recommend the chef's table!
Edmund's Oast: Yet another Downtown gem. BOB COOK is one of Charleston's BEST chefs. His take on traditional southern food, influenced by Asian flavor is out of this world. Not to mention you have a great selection of house-made brews and craft cocktails by the best bartenders in town.

Fat Hen: Out of tourists' wheelhouse, this John's Island classic never disappoints. The pork chop and burger are two my of favorite meals in town. Also, not to be missed is the "Fat Pepper."

The Obstinate Daughter- Favorite restaurant on Sullivan’s Island. Handpicked oysters and soft shell crabs in season, farm to table concept, brilliant remodel of a restaurant, and an AMAZING gelato and bakery called Beardcats, with outdoor seating as well on the street level.
Edmund’s Oast- The indoor and outdoor seating options make it a perfect spot for Downtown dinner, drinks, happy hour, dinner with 10, or dinner with 2. The charcuterie is fantastic, and the rotating draft list and menus keep you guessing in a great way.
(Tie for 3rd!) Basil-  Hands down the best Thai food in town. Thai Hot Pad Prik, Garlic, or Basil dishes are amazing (beef preferred, but chicken isn’t a bad second!).  Great for lunch or date night, and reasonable pricing. Downtown Charleston was the first, and now you can find locations in Mount Pleasant and Columbia SC, and Charlotte NC!
(Tie for 3rd) Home Team BBQ-  Distinct local atmosphere, great food and beer/bourbon selection, bands, trivia nights, and more.  Great spot to unwind or watch a game. Love that there's a Downtown, Sullivan’s Island, and West Ashley location for me to pop into depending on where I am for the day!

The Kickin' Chicken is a favorite place for chicken fingers, wings and things! You don't want to miss their signature "Kickin' Chicken Sandwich" or the bobby fries. Awesome atmosphere for lunch or dinner, and multiple locations in Downtown Charleston, West Ashley, James Island, Summerville and Mount Pleasant.

Moe's Crosstown Tavern in Downtown Charleston is one of my favorite "hole in the wall" places. On the edge of downtown, near Hampton Park and The Citadel, this dive has the best fried tomato BLT with fresh mozzarella cheese. And the Monte Cristo on  french toast isn't too bad either! Great for late night food and drinks while watching a game as well.

Miller's All Day is a newer Downtown place that has a vibrant, vintage atmosphere. Amazing brunch and lunch options, as well as drinks and bakery items. They also do grits milling demonstrations on their early 19th century mill and separator which is interesting! Amazing chefs, Nathan Thurston of Thurston Southern Catering, and Greg Johnsman of Geechie Boy Mills for all the southern fare.
