Hurricane season is something that everyone who lives in Charleston is familiar with, and it is always best to be prepared for whatever inclement weather may come our way. There are many resources available and steps in place to ensure that you and your loved ones can be prepared for a hurricane, and we are breaking down some of the important information for you in case Charleston experiences a hurricane this year.

-Check your Flood Insurance

Flood insurance is required for many Charleston homes, depending on your flood zone. It is always a good idea to confirm the flood insurance you have on your property before Hurricane season, just in case!

-Have an Emergency Kit

It is always a good idea to have an emergency kit ready for hurricane season just in case you lose power or need to leave your home. Be sure to include non-perishable foods, lots of water, household items, sanitation and personal care items, medications, and important documents and paperwork you may need. Having a kit ready in advance can make it easier to grab and go.

-Get your Home Ready

Be sure that all windows and doors are securely shut and locked. If you have storm shutters, make sure they are securely installed. Turn off your water and gas supply as well.

-Know your Evacuation Route

If an evacuation order is given, it is best to leave as soon as possible to try and beat traffic and leave the area quickly. Carpooling with your friends and family can also help to minimize traffic. Depending on what area of Charleston you live in, you can find your appropriate evacuation route online at https://scdot.maps.arcgis.com.

-Have a Family Plan

Make sure that the information about what to do in a hurricane is something you talk with your family about at the start of hurricane season every year. When everyone is on the same page, it can make everything a lot easier in terms of evacuation plans and preparedness.

While this information is a great starting place, there is a lot more information online if you have any questions or concerns about preparing for a hurricane in Charleston. In the event of a hurricane, you can also call (843) 746-3900 and get in touch with the Charleston County Citizen's Information line. Above all, we hope you all stay safe this hurricane season, and know that we are always available for assistance in any way you may need it!
