Regret Proof Your Kitchen Renovation

So, you’re getting ready to renovate your kitchen. The style choices are endless and thinking about all the ways to put your "personal touch” on your project

is making you breathe a little faster.

 Stop. Put down the Pinterest.

Whether you’re renovating for your own immediate enjoyment or in anticipation of putting your home on the market, it’s important to make choices that will keep their beauty, marketability and value.

Below are some suggestions to keep your kitchen looking chic and timeless and future-proof you from having a “what was I thinking” moment. (Think faux painted finishes and tiled countertops of the 90’s)

  • Neutral colors – A classic white kitchen will always be in style. According to a recent report in Houzz 43% of homeowners opted for white cabinets in their renovations. A nod to the newest fad can be demonstrated with wall color or accessories but keep the basic building pieces neutral. It’s much easier and cheaper to change out lighting fixtures or alter the wall color than it is to replace cabinets and tile.

  • Simple Cabinets – the clean lines of the Shaker cabinet have been in style for over 100 years. Because of their simple design Shaker cabinets work in a variety of homes from Farmhouse style to Classic American to Modern.

  • Organization – Although not immediately noticeable, who of us doesn’t get a little thrill seeing pull out drawers for pots and pans, or a cabinet with sheet dividers or a wastebasket station? Homeowners and buyers alike appreciate the increase in efficiency and maximization of space that comes with a well-organized kitchen space.

  • Subway tile – It may be tempting to go with something exciting like geometric tiles or sea glass or tin, but stop for a moment and think about how dated that might look in 5 years. Subway tile has been around for over 100 years and like Shaker cabinets, it looks great in a variety of home styles and provides a clean classic backdrop for the trendier items you might change out to keep up with what’s in vogue.

  • Countertops – Nothing beats white marble for an elegant classic look that never goes out of style. But let’s face it, marble can be super expensive, and you need to be aware of the maintenance required and the potential for staining. Consider granite, butcher block or quartz composite marble lookalikes for less expensive options.
